HBO releases new trailer for Girls series

HBO's upcoming debut series Girls is collecting a buzz without any significant star power or scandalous teasers. Watch the newly released trailer now!

Lena Dunham explains HBO's new seriesFemale twentysomethings regard HBO shows as both a solid source of entertainment as well as a lifestyle guide for their demographic. How will fans of Sex and the City and Entourage react when the cable channel premieres their new series, Girls?

Sure, it's another television show that captures the lives of twentysomething women in New York City, but it's not your usual glamorous portrayal of the lifestyle that is usually idolized on the silver screen. Lena Dunham— creator, writer, director and lead actress of the HBO series— explained that Girls reflects the other side of New York life, one where Dunham's character, Hannah, is financially cut off by her parents, mistreated by her boyfriend and absolutely discouraged about what to do with the rest of her life.

"I knew that there was a connection because it's women in New York, but it really felt like it was tackling a different subject matter," Dunham says. "Gossip Girl was teens duking it out on the Upper East Side and Sex and the City was women who figured out work and friends and now want to nail family life. There was this whole in-between space that hadn't really been addressed."

The series boasts Bridesmaids' Judd Apatow as executive producer, who makes a return to television after the short-lived but critically acclaimed shows, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. And in today's newly released trailer, main character Hannah is saying the phrases we've each lived by at some point in our lives. "My entire life has been one ridiculous mistake after another," she says. Sounds hilarious and rings true, simultaneously.

Girls premieres on Sunday, April 15 on HBO. Watch the trailer below!

Primetime Emmys celebrates curvy women!

Turns out apples and pears aren't just for fancy fruit baskets. Here are seven Emmy-nominated, voluptuous thespians who deserve an award for real-woman appeal.

Christina Hendricks

1. Christina Hendricks

Va-va-va-voom! This lady drives men of all ages wild — and she can act, too. Her sumptuous curves are her signature style, and boy, can she flaunt them! The rumor in Hollywood is that HBO's Mad Men producers forbid any of their actresses from hitting the gym so that they can maintain the body type typical of the late 1960's, before Twiggy became en vogue and Jane Fonda worked us out.

Kathy Bates

2. Kathy Bates

We've loved her since Misery, for which she won the Oscar, and we're missing the NBC show Harry's Law since it's been cancelled. Fingers crossed this year for Kathy in the "Best Actress in a Dramatic Series" category. If she wins, this will be her first Emmy.

Lena Dunham

3. Lena Dunham

Dunham is a double threat — she's nominated for two Emmys in both acting and writing for the HBO show Girls. Lena has her own quirky style, sort of the Zooey Deschanel of hardcore nerdland — she's simply adorkable, but her odds are twice as good as Zooey's.

Melissa McCarthy

4. Melissa McCarthy

This funny-bunny won the Emmy last year for playing Molly in the hit CBS show Mike & Molly. The comedic soul of the film Bridesmaids, it's a long shot that McCarthy will bring home the statue two years in a row, but we're rooting for her.

Margaret Cho

5. Margaret Cho

Nominated this year for "Guest Actress in a Comedy Series," Margaret Cho failed to bring home the Emmy in 2006, when she was nominated for the same role, playing Kim Jong-il on 30 Rock. She again faces stiff competition from the likes of Elizabeth Banks and Maya Rudolph, but we love her fearless acting style.

Loretta Devine

6. Loretta Devine

Given the fact that she's been nominated for "Guest Actress in Drama Series" two years in a row and won last year for her role as Adele Webber in Grey's Anatomy, is it really fair to root for Loretta Divine again?

Merritt Wever

7. Merritt Wever

This is Merritt's first Emmy nom — aww! We love her misguided goody-two-shoes act on Nurse Jackie, but can she hit a home run her first time at bat? Hate to say it, but Sofia Vergara may just have a bit of an edge.

Who do you want to win an Emmy?

By the way, don't miss a thing!

We will be on the red carpet talking to all your favorite celebrities, before and after the show. So, be sure to check out SheKnows Goes to the Shows throughout the night on Sunday, September 23 to hear what the stars have to say about their competition, see what they're wearing, and more!

Not everyone got it right on the 2012 Primetime Emmys red carpet. Lena Dunham led the pack of WTF looks.

Kat Dennings and Lena Dunham worst dressed

We were happy with all the hits on the 2012 Primetime Emmys red carpet, but there were still some misses that made us question whether or not some celebs got dressed in the dark. Case in point? Girls actress Lena Dunham's ill-fitting Prada dress. Dunham is not a big girl, but the cut of the dress does her no favors around the hips. Plus, it's way too long for its shape -- it makes her look matronly. The dress would look better -- even a bit retro -- if it hit about knee-length.

Get the look: Heidi Klum's Emmy Awards hair >>

While we know plenty of guys want to see Two Broke Girls star Kat Dennings shirtless, her scarlet dress by J. Mendel looked downright trashy. We think the dress would have better suited her if the top was a size or two bigger. Don't worry, Kat: No one would forget about your big breasts even if you covered them up.

Emmys best dressed: Who brought it on the red carpet? >>

Worst dressed at the Emmys Julianna Marguiles and Mayim Bialik

We love, love, love The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies, but the Giambattista Valli gown she wore to the 2012 Emmys looks like a cross between a peacock and our grandmother's curtains. We forgive you, Julianna!

Get the look: Emily VanCamp's Emmy Awards makeup >>

The Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik also tops our list of awesome actresses, but she got lost in the yards and yards of fabric it took to make her Pamela Rolland dress. However, she was more worried about her injured hand than her look.

Who's your mummy? It's a wrap for Emmys night >>

"There's not really an elegant way to practice posing or actually pose when your right hand has been injured in an accident," she wrote. "Ali [her stylist] and I are still undecided as to whether I will look ridiculous holding a clutch in my left/good hand or if it's better to have both hands free, as it were. To be decided."

Who was the worst-dressed at the 2012 Primetime Emmys?

Lena Dunham is a writer, so why shouldn't she have her own book deal? Now she does.

Lena Dunham gets $3.5 million book dealGirls creator and actress Lena Dunham is about to take over your bookshelf as well as your television. The 26-year-old has reportedly penned a $3.5 million deal with Random House to write a self-help and advice book tentatively titled Not That Kind of Girl: Advice by Lena Dunham.

HBO Girls: Welcome to the bleak house >>

The book — still in the beginning stages — will include "candid accounts of losing her virginity, trying to eat well , obsessing about death, and so on, along with tips about how to stay focused on work, how not to ruin a potential relationship, and what have you," according to the book proposal.

Worst-dressed at the Emmys : What were they thinking? >>

"One section will recount various ways in which older men continue to be condescending and sexist, and will describe 'the most awkward date ever with an older director.' Another will describe travel to various places, including Israel and Japan."

Interesting.

HBO Girls: Hipsterism gone awry >>

Dunham is quite the polarizing figure in entertainment: People either really, really love her or really, really hate her. She's learned to deal with the criticism that comes with having a hit television show,  though it's admittedly through her own filter.

"I'm in therapy since I was 7 so I thought I'd cornered the market on self-criticality," she said at the New York Film Festival over the weekend, according to The Los Angeles Times. "As an artist I want to shelter myself in a safe place to work in... but as an executive producer I need to open myself up to people's responses… [So] I dabble in press. I pick and choose. I have a Mom with a Google alert who will forward things to me."

We can't wait to check it out.

Lena Dunham talks about her first time... voting

The Girls star decided to voice her support over an issue that's important to her: voting. But in true Lena Dunham fashion, she used sex to do that.

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham has never exactly been shy about talking about her sexuality. So when she came out with a new ad in which she started off by talking about what seemed to be that very subject, not much seemed out of place.

"The first time shouldn't be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy," she said. "Someone who really cares about and understands women."

She continued by saying that your first time should be with "a guy who cares whether you get health insurance, and specifically whether you get birth control," among other things.

But as the ad went on, it became clear that Dunham was not talking about sex, but instead about politics. And the 26-year-old actress/writer/director knew who her target audience was.

"Although much of her work unabashedly features Dunham having sex, being rejected by boys, obsessing about her body image, and abusing her parents' generosity," said the LA Times, "Dunham's tongue-in-cheek outspokenness has empowered many girls to doggedly embrace their own work-in-progress womanhood, however incomplete or poorly-expressed."

Over one million people watched the ad on YouTube in just two days, and Dunham felt she got her point across.

"My first time voting was amazing," she continued. "It was this line in the sand. Before, I was a girl; now, I was a woman. I went to the polling station, I pulled back the curtain, I voted for Barack Obama."

Some critics have been criticizing the ad, saying it was too explicit for the voting audience, but Dunham tweeted afterward about how important it was to her.

"The video may be light," she said, "but the message is serious: vote for women's rights."

And on Friday, she apparently went one step further in showing how little she cares about her critics.

"It tickles me to no end that while my twitter feed was blowing up with conservative hate," she tweeted, "I was literally hanging out in a pile of bisexuals."

Girls Season 2 teaser

$

Come January, Girls returns. Here's hoping that as the show's creator, Lena Dunham, continues to grow up, her characters will, too. Or, at the very least, perhaps they'll become slightly less self-involved.

Girls castGirls returns to HBO in January, and we've got the Season 2 teaser. Granted, it's not so much a teaser as a video set to music that has a weird "urban jungle" feel to it, with the cast making faces and wandering around Brooklyn. Still, it's creating buzz for the show's return.

What should you expect from the second season of Lena Dunham's Girls? That's rough.

First, you have to keep in mind that the twentysomething girls appearing on the show aren't exactly ordinary. At best, they're rough configurations of a few extreme possibilities. Do you have parents who can afford to fund a decent apartment, even in Brooklyn, and also pay all your other bills? Probably not. Would you be able to tell the difference between cocaine and weed? Most likely. Would you ever leave your friends hanging out at an abortion clinic while you got drunk and hooked up with some guy in a bar? Who wouldn't, right?Girls Lena Dunham

On the other hand, there are moments of relatability amongst the characters, especially in the relationship department. Some of us have experienced the claustrophobic, overwhelming love that Marnie experiences with Charlie. We can understand her desire to flee, no matter how absolutely adorable he is. We've also experienced the opposite of that. We've been pushed and pulled around by guys who may not be awful humans, but who are just as floundering and unsure as the rest of us. Maybe not all of us can relate to falling for our employer's listless husband who's twice our age, but some of us probably can.

Expectations are cruel, you know.

However, here's what viewers from last season might be hoping for, at the very least. Shoshana must date Ray, who turned out to be a sweetie in "The Crackcident." Marnie needs to either fully let go of Charlie or finally come to terms with the fact that he loves her more and that's OK. Hopefully, Hannah and Adam will also be able to get themselves together and have a functional relationship. If not, they'll need to move on and find new people. And Jessa? Jessa needs to keep her knees together. Finally, everyone is hoping the girls of Girls can become slightly less self-centered.

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Lena Dunham and Heidi Klum's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham

Oh, Lena... we just love your HBO hit show Girls and we get that you play a quirky, awkward character on TV, but this is reality and the red carpet, sweetie. Actress-writer-director-producer and now author Lena Dunham attended Glamour's Women of the Year awards wearing this sad sack of a dress.

Her Roksanda Ilincic designed gown desperately needs a tailor. It's so baggy and shapeless, and the excess fabric in the middle does absolutely nothing flattering for her figure. The different colored sleeves remind us of our tee ball jerseys back in the day, and the mid-calf length hem isn't doing her any favors, either.

Lena should also learn how to pose! Even if your dress is hideous, standing up straight, putting your shoulders back and placing a hand on your hip would do wonders for her silhouette.

The final verdict? Lena, you can't be good at everything, so do yourself a favor and get a stylist. Your star is only rising from here on out, so you may as well learn how to rock the red carpet. Ditch the dress, but keep those shiny high heels.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum was so bummed her annual Halloween party in NYC got cancelled due to the hurricane this year, she decided to wear a costume while hosting MTV's EMA awards in Frankfurt, Germany. Because the Project Runway host and fashionista couldn't seriously think this getup was OK, could she?

Don't get us wrong — Heidi has an amazing body and would look gorgeous in almost anything, but the lace-up bodice and super high thigh slit scream Vegas streetwalker to us. Besides all that skin showing, the printed, embellished, one-sleeved ensemble looks cheap. And the matching lace-up blue shoes are the icing on this tacky cake.

The final verdict? If you've got it, flaunt it... but don't overexpose it, Heidi! We know you're a single, sexy hot mama, but please say Auf Wiedersehen to this garish gown. We love your hair and makeup though!

Lena Dunham is furious with Gawker

After Gawker published the entire book proposal that netted Girls' Lena Dunham millions from Random House, Dunham's attorney asks them to take it down. They comply — sort of.

Lena Dunham at movie opening

Lena Dunham doesn't like scrutiny, it appears — after Gawker.com published her book proposal, Dunham lawyered up.

First, Dunham's counsel demanded Gawker take down Dunham's proposal for the upcoming advice book "on everything from sex to eating to traveling to work," titled Not That Kind of Girl, which sold to Random House for $3.5 million . Gawker had published the proposal in its entirety last Friday, with ironic commentary.

Maybe Dunham was set off by that, maybe by the tons of snarky reader comments, which made fun of quoted lines such as, "People often ask me how I have the bravery to tell my stories."

Anyhoo, Gawker complied. Mostly. The site removed the proposal, except for a dozen brief quotes that Gawker writer John Cook mocked mercilessly.

Lena Dunham talks about her first time... voting>>

That wasn't enough for Dunham and/or her representation, which demanded all the quotes come down. Gawker refused, telling Deadline.com, "We're not removing the quotes."

What happens next remains to be seen. Dunham is publicly mum on the fracas. Meanwhile, Gawker is having a field day.

Gawker quotes Dunham's proposal thusly: "I've never kept a diary, [because] if a girl writes in her diary and no one's there to read it did she really write at all?"

Gawker responds: "Lena Dunham's personal litigation counsel Charles Harder has contacted Gawker to relay a demand from his client, Lena Dunham, that we remove the above quote from our web site. In order to clarify our intent in quoting the above matter from Dunham's proposal, we have decided to append the following commentary: The quoted sentence demonstrates that Dunham is incapable of conceiving a rationale for writing that doesn't serve the goal of drawing attention to herself."

Dunham writes: "I went to my first Women's Action Coalition meeting at age three."

Gawker responds: "The quoted sentence is indicative of a nauseating and cloying posture of precociousness that permeates the entire proposal."

The book has no publication date thus far, and is apparently yet to be written. Meanwhile, the second season of HBO's Girls will premiere on Jan. 13, 2013.

Another sneak peek at Girls' Season 2

Remember that time you sat through an entire season of Girls waiting for things to "get real"? It looks like the wait continues.

Girls

HBO's series Girls returns for its second season on Jan. 13, and the cable network has just released a second trailer to help fans prepare.

The new trailer promotes what looks to be a continuation of all the first season's completely unrealistic scenarios, which Lena Dunham and the gang try to pass off as run-of-the-mill twentysomething behavior. In the second trailer alone, we see co-bathing ; a continuing relationship with someone that started off as a creepy, older one-night stand; and an incredibly dramatic dinner among friends.

Will it ever end?

Probably not. Despite its unrelatability, brattiness and utter ridiculousness, Girls pulled in tons of viewers for HBO and earned favorable ratings. And of course, there are moments of relatability. You see the characters wanting the guy you just broke up with or falling victim to a highly dysfunctional relationship.

Lena Dunham of Girls

Still, the girls of Girls are made up almost entirely of self-centered, entitled female characters who act strong but are inevitably weak and rather poor excuses for females. Sure, Hannah is far from perfect looking, and her "quirk" comes out as just annoyingly strange. But does that mean the only relationship she can have is with someone who is even more messed up? One incredibly disturbing split-second shot shows Hannah on top of someone who looks to be Thomas-John , the boyfriend of Jessa . Someone, please slo-mo the crap out of this trailer and tell me otherwise.

Last season featured virgin, awkward sex with a mentally unstable quasi-boyfriend, a "crack-cident," a pregnancy scare , tons of joblessness and a completely unfathomable portrayal of property values in Brooklyn. It also included way too many pretentious, "I'm unique" comments from Hannah and her gang.

The latest trailer starts off with Hannah's line "I've always marched to the beat of my own drummer." In other words, expect more of the same from Season 2 of Girls.

Are pants making a comeback?

Will 2013 be the year of pants? It seems like it, judging from the outfits Lena Dunham and Homeland star Morena Baccarin rocked recently.

Lena Dunham and Morena Baccarin

Most stars opt to wear dresses to big events, but a few are bucking the trend by opting for pants on the red carpet.

Case in point: Lena Dunham and Homeland star Morena Baccarin at the People's Choice Awards.

The Girls writer, director and star opted for a black Valentino pantsuit for the show's Season 2 premiere earlier this week. The big secret behind the look? No undergarments.

"I'm not wearing underwear," she told reporters on the red carpet.

At least going commando gave her the confidence to wear the form-fitting jumpsuit in the first place.

"I didn't think I could get away with [wearing it] because 'jumpsuit' seems like such a dirty word," the 26-year-old added. "But people are acting like it's a normal thing to do, so I'm just rolling with it."

It seems like everyone has been talking about Dunham and her fashion choices — or non-choices. She's often without pants on her hit HBO show, and her character, Hannah, also rocks a mesh shirt this season.

People might criticize her for it, but she just doesn't care.

"Now, meeting actresses who such a big part of their job is about what they look like, I feel so lucky to be freed from that prison," she told V magazine earlier this month. "I ate cake for breakfast on the day of the Emmys, I ate cake for dinner, my workout didn't require Spanx, and I still feel like I looked better than people expected me to. It was amazing."

Lena Dunham hit a home run at the 2013 Golden Globes in her Zac Posen dress.

Lena Dunham at the Golden Globes

Lena Dunham might like to keep people's expectations low, but she might have to rethink that after the 2013 Golden Globes. The Girls writer and creator shows up on the red carpet in a brown Zac Posen creation.

The review? She looks fabulous — even if the dress isn't cooperating.

"My breasts have a tendency to shove my dress to the left, so I have to shove it back," she told E! on the red carpet of her mini-wardrobe malfunction.

The 26-year-old actress recently told V magazine that she doesn't put much thought into the whole Hollywood fashion game.

"Now, meeting actresses who such a big part of their job is about what they look like, I feel so lucky to be freed from that prison," she said. "I ate cake for breakfast on the day of the Emmys, I ate cake for dinner, my workout didn't require Spanx, and I still feel like I looked better than people expected me to. It was amazing."

In fact, she tweeted that she'd rather be in bed watching Girls.

"I am excited for the Golden Globes/sad I won't be in bed with dumplings reading your twitter responses to the @girlsHBO season premiere," Dunham tweeted before arriving at the red carpet.

The reason? Her fab dress was killing her.

"If Golden Globes support garment kills me I leave my archives to my mother and my ephemera to my 8 year old friend Coco," she added.

A romance brewing: Why did Lena Dunham thank Chad Lowe?

Why did Lena Dunham thank Chad Lowe during her Golden Globe acceptance speech? We have the answer and it's more romantic than you might think.

Lena Dunham thanked Chad Lowe. Yes, that happened at the drunken party that is the Golden Globes. In case you missed it, the 2013 Golden Globes aired last night and just as we predicted, this Hollywood party got weirder as the night went on and alcohol flowed into lithe actresses.

And one of the strangest moments of the 2013 Golden Globes? Definitely in the top 3 was Lena Dunham's second acceptance speech of the night for her HBO show Girls; Dunham won for Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical, and then she thanked Chad Lowe. Huh?

Golden Globes 2013: The complete winners list >>

"It took a village to raise this very demented child and I hope everyone who was involved feels thanked every single day… I also promised myself that if I ever got this chance I would thank Chad Lowe. I'm sorry! I just promised and I promised my mom!"

The cast of Dunham's Girls erupts in laughter and so does the audience. Did Lena Dunham just thank Chad Lowe? As in Hilary Swank's ex-husband? What. Just. Happened.

Golden Globes 2013: Lena Dunham loved by the HFPA>>

Dunham explained to the Golden Globes press why she thanked Lowe — apparently it was a joke meant to resolve an old wound against Lowe from Hilary Swank. .

PopSugar tweeted its firsthand account, "Lena Dunham on why she thanked Chad Lowe: 'Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I'm an a**hole...' #GoldenGlobes press room."

Hmm, OK. It doesn't really make sense that Dunham would involve herself in an almost 15-year-old celebrity drama . Lowe took the opportunity to reach out to Dunham on Twitter and a lovefest was born.

Chad tweeted, "Congrats to @lenadunham on your Golden Globe win. But, seriously? You forget to thank me?! After all we've been through? I'm shocked." Lowe then said, "Dearest @lenadunham YOU COMPLETE ME"

If you're still confused — and we were too, so don't worry — the relationship between Chad Lowe and Lena Dunham goes way deeper than we thought: All the way back to August 2012.

Dunham and Lowe tweet each other a lot and this whole Oscar redemption move was in the works for a long time via Twitter. Lowe seemingly reached out to Dunham on Aug. 7, 2012, and tweeted, "@lenadunham What would make that whole Oscars debacle better is if you wrote it for me… Keep up the great work!"

Dunham tweeted back, "@ichadlowe What a day-maker you are! FYI I will probably mention you if I ever receive any award at all in my lifetime .

So there you go: The mystery of why Lena Dunham thanked Chad Lowe in her Golden Globe acceptance speech is now a solved riddle of the celebrity universe.

Girls Season 2 premiere recap

HBO's award-winning comedy hits the ground running in its second season.

Girls' Hannah, Shoshanna, and MarnieIt’s fitting that on the same night Girls cleaned up at the 70th Golden Globes Awards , its second season rattled off a sterling debut.

We last saw Hannah woofing down cake on a Coney Island beach. Our first glimpse of her in 2013 is in an equally unflattering view, wrapped in someone other than Adam’s arms.

Don’t worry. It’s merely Elijah, her former college boyfriend turned gay roommate.

The opening scene is a nifty, little trick by Dunham, whose directorial skills greatly improved over the course of the first season. She trusts we remember how Hannah struggled mightily with Adam’s avalanching admission of love that ultimately drove her to that soul-searching moment with cake on the beach.

Girls, which breathed fresh air into the TV world last year and set the world record for gratuitous nudity in a comedy, picks up right where it left off as we see Hannah, topless, and in the middle of the deed.

It must be Adam, this time, right? Negative. It’s some random dude we’ve never seen before.

The bold move to begin with a diversion is optimistically a harbinger of growth and maturity, in not only Dunham’s career, but the show itself. Girls displayed so much promise in Season 1 that it’d be a shame to see it regress in its second year. Good for Dunham beginning with a bang .

Girls' Adam and HannahNot much time has passed between Season 1 and Season 2. We know that because soon after learning Hannah’s fooling around with a new beau, we find Adam laid up in bed and struggling with the effects of being hit by a truck .

Hannah now assists his daily needs, and she’s become quite adroit with a bedpan.

It’s clear from the conversation Hannah has with her new squeeze in a bookstore that things with Adam have gone awry. She wants to tell Adam things aren’t working out — that she’s done, moved on, tired of cleaning up his piss. But with Hannah things are never that simple.

On one hand, it seems like the same old Hannah — stuck in a bleak situation at the mercy of Adam. But things are a bit different with her new man on the sly. Hannah’s completely in charge of her covert affair: No late-night visits, no social appearances, and certainly no mention of the word “love.”

It’s refreshing to see Hannah exercise a firm grasp on a romantic situation. We suffered with her through the turbulent courtship of Adam. It’s about damn time she started to realize just how wacko that dude really is.

By the end of the season premiere, Hannah finally gets the last word and breaks things off with Adam, who’s left hobbling to the couch on one leg. The imagery is poignant. Her strength versus his weakness represents a major power shift in the show.

Maybe this is how Hannah turns the corner this season and blossoms into the empowering master of relationships instead of being toyed with all the time...

Or maybe she’ll violate her own rule and show up at the door of her new boy toy in the middle of the night.

We know that by the end of the episode Hannah is still Hannah, but what about the rest of the gang?

Marnie is near rock bottom. She fights with her mom, misses Hannah, gets fired from her job at the art gallery, and hasn’t had sex in a long, long time.

When Hannah and Elijah host a housewarming party, we see Marnie at her worst as she struggles when seeing her ex, Charlie , argue with his b****y girlfriend.

Girls' Marnie and ElijahMarnie’s so despondent that by the end of the party, she’s half-naked and opening up for business with… Elijah? Sure they made out once in college, but Marnie quickly finds out that gay men don’t exactly make the best slump busters. The post-party couch hookup is arguably the best scene in the entire premiere. Williams and Rannells deserve a lot of credit for pulling off a strangely funny, yet deeply emotional scene.Girls' Shoshana and Ray

Shoshanna , meanwhile, is fairing a little better than Marnie. We find her for the first time in Season 2 in her bedroom and performing some sort of deflowering ritual. Who can forget Shosh’s First Time with Ray at the end of last season? The experience seems to have left Shoshanna bitter as she avoids Ray for most of Hannah’s party. Eventually they kiss, make up, and presumably go for Round 2.

Jessa is the only member of the group we don’t see much of. We catch a small glimpse of her, fresh off the honeymoon and cutting the line for a cab at the airport with her husband. Jessa’s shotgun marriage to Thomas-John still makes absolutely no sense, and her lack of screen time is a trend that hopefully continues throughout Season 2.

Howard Stern apologizes for his Girls comments

Howard Stern: Open mouth, insert foot.

Lena Dunham doesn't care about Howard Stern

Last week, everyone's favorite shock jock, Howard Stern, unleashed his fury on Lena Dunham and her show, Girls. Not only did he attack the quality of the show and Dunham's habit of casting herself as lead, he also poked fun at her less-than-slender frame.

It's OK, though. He's taken it all back. Apparently, he really regrets his "hatchet job" on Dunham and Girls.

"I felt bad because I really do love the show Girls and enjoy it," he said on his radio show. "And I admire the girl who writes it."

Stern even went so far as to ask his show's producer to track down Dunham and ask her on the air so he could make a formal apology, adding, "I do love the show and it makes me feel bad that she is getting the impression that I somehow think she's just a talentless little fat chick."

That's the exact opposite of what Stern said last Monday. Among other truly eloquent insults, he referred to the Girls creator as "a little fat girl who kind of looks like Jonah Hill."

After repeatedly insulting her weight, it seems a little like Stern realized his comments made him sound like a jacka** who hated the show purely because the lead actress wasn't rail thin.

And, OK, so maybe the vast majority of the world really would appreciate if Lena Dunham would keep her clothes on. But that one factor shouldn't be your only reason for hating a show.

Plus, the bigger issue at hand is that Stern is still getting paid to be an awful human being. There are probably plenty of reasons to hate on Lena Dunham. Why did he only choose "fat?"

On the right side, Dunham is comfortable enough with herself to take Stern's hateful remarks only in stride. When she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman last week, she said she really liked when Stern said, "Congrats to her, it's so hard for little fat chicks to get anything going these days."

Dunham found that pretty awesome, saying, "I just wanted to be like, my gravestone says, 'She was a little fat chick, but she got it goin'."

We applaud Dunham's humor. It takes a lot of confidence to put up with Howard Stern.

What the stars' Golden Globes fashions really reveal about their lives

We can learn a great deal about a celebrity’s true self as expressed through fashion on the red carpet. Why they select one haute couture gown over another speaks volumes about what they’re going through at this moment in their lives, how they want to be seen by the public, and most importantly, how they see themselves.

We can learn a great deal about a celebrity’s true self as expressed through fashion on the red carpet. Why they select one haute couture gown over another speaks volumes about what they’re going through at this moment in their lives, how they want to be seen by the public, and most importantly, how they see themselves.

Despite the fashion aftershocks or “afterfrocks” and their stylists' agonized attempts to pull the best gowns for their client before the big day, when it comes to the final decision, it’s often made far more intuitively than you might imagine.

This year's best actress winner, Jennifer Lawrence, tried on just two gowns the day before the award show before selecting the third dress, a deep coral silk satin trumpet creation by Dior Haute Couture, to wear into the history books. I’ve spent longer deciding what to wear on a first date!

So let's peel back the layers of silk chiffon and the facade of hand-sewn sequins to reveal what some of Sunday night's most polarizing Golden Globes gowns really said about the stars who wore them.

Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham

What her gown says: “I’m loyal, I’m real, but I still need your approval.”

Having grown up in the New York artist scene, the Girls creator and winner of best television performance elected to wear a gown by childhood friend Zac Posen. Lena’s decision to wear a gown by her longtime buddy reveals her deep sense of loyalty and commitment to staying true to herself in the face of her whirlwind rise to fame.

A self-admitted fashion lover and usually far quirkier dresser, Lena moved away from her edgier looks for her first major awards show, revealing her respect for the establishment but also her desire to be accepted more than she would like to admit.

She may be a fresh voice discussing contemporary women’s issues, but the classic corset and ball gown silhouette reveals she has a love for tradition and is a great student of past greats.

Lena bravely reveals herself in her writing and on screen performances, but when it comes to the red carpet and being a star, she still hasn’t quite come into her own and embraced her fabulous differences.

Our prediction: As Lena continues to ascend, expect to see her embrace an edgier more “her” look as she realizes that she needn’t fit into Hollywood's convention, when she can simply rewrite it. More edge, less fabric.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez

What her gown says: “I’m a star and I can finally be myself in a relationship.”

If there’s anyone in Hollywood who knows that the right dress that dances between scandalous and spectacular can make or break a career, it’s Jennifer Lopez. Her navel-grazing leafy green Versace gown at the 2000 Grammy Awards launched her into a whole new stratosphere and turned her into J. Lo the brand.

At Sunday night's Golden Globes, Jenny from the block delivered the night's most risque and high fashion moment in a body-baring, cream lace Zuhair Murad gown that left little to the imagination.

Despite its almost nude look, the choice of virginal cream lace and long sleeves offered the perfect amount of modesty and ladylike appeal. This dress is classic Lopez — as she comes to terms with the fact that she is all at once a sexy, free spirited girl from the Bronx, a powerful mogul, a romantic who wants nothing more than to be in love and treated like a lady, and a proud mother of two.

After years of being in relationships where she either had to be “little miss perfect” or “bad boy babe,” she now realizes that she is a mix of both. The nakedness of this gown reflects an inner peace that comes with finally being in a relationship that allows her to be her true self .

Even her hairstyle — half slick, half classic — mirrors this dichotomy between naughty and nice.

Our prediction: Expect color and drama during the award season as she takes risks and owns every moment.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway

What her gown says: “I want my talent to outshine my celebrity.”

No one plays the role of humble, earnest thespian more convincingly than Anne Hathaway. The Les Miserables winner’s white sequin strapless Chanel gown expressed a desire to show her unbelievable talent naked and unembellished for the world to see.

The white fuss-free detailing and clean, simple lines reflect her inner idealistic leaning. Despite her material wealth, this girl values ideas and ideals above all else. She is a perfectionist and principled in everything she does.

Her uncompromising approach to what she views as right and wrong is both her strength and her weakness. She can easily become so attached to the cause that she becomes extreme in her actions and morally judgmental in her thinking. Despite her holier-than-thou approach to life, if she believes in something, she will fight for it with her life, which makes her a loyal friend and a success in everything she attempts.

Our prediction: Expect a gown hiding a baby bump soon, as marriage becomes the focus.

Girls mixes dating and politics

Girls gets political in Episode 2 as Hannah tries to close the door on two relationships.

Hannah gets relationship and life advice from Jessa.

“I Get Ideas” — the second episode of Girls, Season 2 — is laced with relationship advice for everyone.

Women: Never... ever... ever... date a Republican!

Throughout its short life span, Girls has surprisingly remained apolitical. Not any longer.

The once-soaring fling between Hannah and her new beau, Sandy, comes crashing back to earth. Their breakup has nothing to do with his harsh criticism of her short stories, and it certainly has nothing to do with his skin color.

Sandy's time on Girls was short-lived thanks to his conservative views.

It’s all about the fact he probably voted for Mitt Romney.

Hannah and Sandy's breakup provided Lena Dunham with a soapbox for her biting critique of conservative America.

Hannah simply cannot date Sandy because he must be against gays, women, and of course — he likes guns.

Seriously? She can't date a Republican? What is this, 1973?

For Sandy, girls apparently break up with him all the time for his Republican ideals. Maybe he should try picking his next mate from one of Romney's binders for a women?

Dunham tries to distract us by mixing in a few witty jokes throughout the breakup scene. But her political agenda, which comes across as feeble-minded and stereotypical, is far too transparent. It’s a shame, really, that Dunham uses her growing stature and influence to minimize politics like she’s a partisan MSNBC pundit.

Newlyweds: The key to happiness is a basket full of 3 puppies!

Not too many people found flaws in the first season of Girls. But as the show marches on, just like her ubiquitous red push-up bra, Jessa continues to be exposed as the show’s most glaring weakness.

No matter how hard you try, it’s absolutely unimaginable to make any sense of her shotgun marriage to Thomas-John in Season 1. And now, any time the couple shares time on screen, it’s a painful reminder that no TV show is truly perfect.

Gag! Jessa and Thomas-John are the show's biggest weakness.

We do glean some words of martial wisdom from Jessa while she condescends Hannah’s life during a picnic on a lovely Brooklyn afternoon. The key, Jessa, explains is not stifling your lover’s creativity; which in their wacky marriage world — that makes this relationship seem normal — means leaving your wife with a basket full of puppies.

Speaking of puppies, how soon before PETA files a complaint against Lena Dunham for giving new meaning to “indecent exposure” for stuffing that poor Chihuahua down her blouse?

New couples: Bizarre pillow talk brings you closer!

Shoshanna and Ray are getting pretty good at spending time in bed. And their pillow talk ranges as far off topic as bathing pigs at summer camp to career options for Marnie .

Poor Marnie. She can’t find a job and has to come home to seeing Ray in his boxers. Good thing Shosh has a friend on speed dial who makes bank as a nightclub hostess.

Who doesn't want to see more Marnie?

The odd connection ensures Marnie can put her good looks to use as she lands a new job at a club. And if that means we'll continue to see Marnie in hookerish outfits, then I hope hostess positions come with good benefits and a 401.

Gay men: Don’t try and “three-pump” your former girlfriend’s best friend!

Elijah is busy from the very first scene of the episode running damage control for his inglorious moment with Marnie on Hannah's couch.

George, his much older sugar daddy, isn’t playing along. Despite Elijah’s best attempt to explain how the brevity of the encounter negates George’s drunken outburst at the same party, Elijah winds up single.

But that's not the only breakup lesson Girls bestows upon us...

Ex-boyfriends: Creepy homemade music videos will not help you get the girl back

Is there a single facet of human existence that Adam performs in a non-maybe this guy belongs in a mental institutional-kind of way?

Nope. Didn’t think so.

Adam isn’t taking the breakup with Hannah well. He emails her painfully hideous homemade music videos where he croons in pain for his long lost lover while his collection of random tools are seen prominently in the background.

Adam's American Idol audition tapes give both viewers and Hannah the creeps. She makes a crack about his murderous tendencies that only seem funny until Adam shows up at her apartment, late night while jonesin' for some milk.

No longer sporting his leg cast, Adam is surprisingly spry enough to playfully chase Hannah around the kitchen. Too bad for Adam she isn’t amused and dials 9-1-1 when he’s not looking. Hannah quickly hangs up, but the damage is done.

As Adam is walking down the stairs, two of New York’s finest arrive. Thanks to two unpaid parking tickets and a history of public urination, Adam gets hauled off in handcuffs as Hannah watches, confused and alone.

It's a fitting end of the episode for Hannah, who we saved our last piece of advice for...

Lena Dunham bummed about Rihanna and Chris Brown

The creator and star of HBO's Girls lent her voice to Alec Baldwin's "Here's The Thing" podcast, and explained why she's down on Rihanna for getting back together with Chris Brown.

Lena Dunham at the Golden Globes

Lena Dunham frowns when Rihanna posts an Instagram picture of herself with Chris Brown.

"I don't ever want to throw stones from my glass house," the queen of buzzy HBO show Girls says. "But I follow her on Instagram and I just think about how many little girls beyond what I could even comprehend are obsessed with Rihanna."

With so many young, female followers, Rihanna should be more of a role model? Yes, says Dunham.

When Rihanna got back together with Brown, who famously assaulted her the night before the 2009 Grammys, and when Rihanna "posts a million pictures of them smoking marijuana together on a bed," Dunham feels depressed. "It cracks my heart in half in a way that makes me feel like I'm 95 years old."

Howard Stern apologizes for his Girls comments>>

Dunham isn't alone in her distress. Celebrities from Real Housewife Taylor Armstrong to Tyra Banks to Supremes singer Mary Brown have offered Rihanna unsolicited public advice. Oprah told Extra that she had "no judgment" for the couple in 2012 — a different story from Rihanna's 2009 Oprah appearance, soon after the altercation with Brown, when O told Rihanna, "If a man hits you once, he will hit you again. If I were your friend I would call you up and say give it some time. Get yourself some counseling."

Millionaire Matchmaker's Patti Stanger bucked the tide in a People article, where she advised Rihanna to "listen to your gut" and reunite if it "feels right." But she also cautioned the 24-year-old Barbadian singer to watch "how Chris handles pressure, jealousy and anxiety."

Girls goes YOLO

Who is a worse friend: Hannah or Marnie? How about: Who cares?!

Girls season 2 episode 3 recap

Almost everything about Girls latest episode — “Bad Friend” is an unmitigated disaster that can be summed up in four letters: YOLO!!

Girls is now a full-fledged endorser of “You Only Live Once” — the trendy 21st century life-philosophy equivalent of the yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet.

Sunday night’s episode focuses on the existential question of who’s a worse friend — Hannah or Marnie? And by the end of show that answer isn’t clear; nor is it an intriguing enough story line to keep regurgitating every couple of episodes.

Hannah lands a new job as a freelance writer making $200 an article. Her new boss possesses a wannabe avant-garde outlook that inspires Hannah to write an article about trying coke for the first time.

Girls' Laird

Hannah doesn’t know any coke dealers though. She turns to Jessa, who is busy selling clothes with Shoshanna on their apartment stoop. Marnie suggests Hannah tries the junkie living on the basement floor of her building.

This sets the stage for our introduction to Laird, who's actually a recovering drug addict and loves pomegranate juice. We also learn that when he’s not fighting the urge to do drugs, he likes to pontificate witty Wi-Fi nicknames.

Thank goodness for Laird. He needs to stick around because his performance is the lone bright spot of the episode. He’s surprisingly quick-witted for a former druggie, certifiably creepy, and inexplicably crushing on Hannah and her Madame Ovaries.

Laird hooks Hannah up with drugs, which leads to her most burning question of the night: When is it an appropriate time to snort coke?

Hannah and Elijah decide on 4 p.m. Why? Because YOLO!! of course. And soon the former college couple is higher than Kirstie Alley in the 80s. Hannah is technically on the clock, so she whips out a magic marker and scribbles her drug-induced thoughts on the wall. Elijah suggests they go to a rave hosted by Andrew Andrew, two gay iPad DJs.

Meanwhile, Marnie is hard at work in her new role as a server at some kind of club for rich, old men. Expect on this night, Booth Jonathan just so happens to be hanging with the gray hairs.

Now who can forget the infamous hand Booth lent the show — err, Marnie — in Season 1? Booth Jonathan’s the not-so-hot-in-real-life art dealer dude who Girls goes out of its way to depict as the oh-my-god-this-art-dealer-dude-is-so-hot-I-want-to-go-in-the-bathroom-and-finger-myself guy.

Yes, Booth in his emerald green sport coat and wispy beard is so alluring that Marnie once pleasured herself in a bathroom at the mere thought of kissing him. Now she gets her chance after he steals her away from work so they can go have sex. YOLO!!

Booth takes Marnie to his apartment, which moonlights as a former post office building turned torture chamber. Marnie doesn’t mind. The gruesome dollhouses and his psychedelic mind control box machine impress her like she's auditioning to be the next Mya in Zero Dark Thirty.

Girls' Marnie and Booth

Marnie and Booth end up banging it out, right in front of a cousin of Raggedy Ann. Booth makes Marnie ask the doll questions while he belts out a serious of awkward groans and finishes the job.

Marnie’s response?

She laughs hysterically. Because after all, having sex with the oh-my-god-this-art-dealer-dude-is-so-hot-I-want-to-go-in-the-bathroom-and-finger-myself guy is what YOLO!! is all about.

Girls' Hannah at the club

Back at the Andrew Andrew show, Hannah and Elijah produce enough sweat to put out a fire. Hannah swaps shirts with a Eurotrash boy and ends up sporting a see-through neon fishnet tank top the rest of the show. Hannah and Elijah snort copious lines of coke off a bathroom seat with toilet paper sticking out the lid. YOLO!!

Unfortunately, Hannah’s euphoric night comes to a screeching halt when Elijah reveals his three-pump moment with Marnie. This sends Hannah into a fit of cocaine-induced rage, and she sets out to confront Marnie at Booth’s house. Elijah tags along, and so, too, does... Laird! who’s been following Hannah the entire night!

And who says chivalry’s dead?

The showdown between Hannah and Marnie plays out as expected. Hannah tells Marnie she’s a terrible friend. Marnie tells Hannah she’s a terrible friend.

This is where Girls keeps getting it wrong. Seeing Hannah and Marnie fight, again, is almost as tormenting as watching re-runs of Booth’s homemade Duncan Sheik music video.

Hannah then storms out of Booth’s apartment with Laird. We last see them swapping spit in the basement hallway. Laird steals the show when asking Hannah if he can kiss back. She tells him yes, but only for tonight, and for work.

What Hannah really should have said is, “Yes, Laird. Because you know, YOLO!!”
